The Dorado Base of the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI) is a veterans organization of Qualified Submarine Veterans. The primary requirement to join is “Qualified in Submarines”. The Dorado Base is centered in Wichita, but we have members all over Kansas South of I-70. The base is named in honor of one of the 52 submarines lost during World War II. The USS Dorado SS-248 Memorial is located in Wichita’s Veterans Memorial Park. The memorial consists of a MK 14 Exercise Steam Torpedo, a stone listing the crew when the USS Dorado SS-248 was lost, two benches, and three plaques on pedestals. We meet 3 or 4 times a year. We have built a 16’ model of a Gato Class Fleet Boat that we parade whenever possible. Our primary event is the Tolling of the Boats Ceremony. The Dorado Base performs this ceremony on the first Sunday of October each year. This ceremony honors the 65 submarines and their crews that have been lost by the US Navy.
